From dumpster find to treasure #ididthat

Over the years, painting furniture has become familiar and it is a beloved hobby for me.

The first piece of furniture I painted was a chest table, back when my husband and I moved into our first rental apartment about ten years ago.

Over the years there have been many kinds of projects and when the right piece of furniture comes along, my hands itch to start creating. Nowadays, in our detached house, all the furniture that can be painted/tweaked has already been done, and projects come only occasionally.

Our family just had a youngest child and our 2.5-year-old daughter was ready to move to a junior bed so the crib could be freed up. However, the bed was missing and I wasn't keen on buying a new one.

My husband spotted a recently discarded Ikea Sundvik bed from a local dumpster group. It didn't take long before the bed was picked up and I started browsing Frenchic paints.

Choosing the paint and shade

I have painted with Frenchic paints before.

The gingerbread trim in our daughter's room is painted with Frenchic wall paint in the shade Last dance, and the doors of the Ikea Kallax shelf are painted with Trim Paint in the shade Last dance.

The shade of the upcoming bed should match these as well as with forest green wallpaper.

I found the shade pretty much immediately when I browsed the shades in Frenchic's online store.

Lazy Range series Nougat, light pink beige

A delicate and calming shade for a little girl's room.

Best of all, Frenchic paints are a safe choice for a child's room because all paints are EN71:3 certified, so you can safely paint children's room furniture or even toys with them.

Lazy Range series paint was a new discovery for me, I was also interested in these points:

  • Because of the Self Levelling feature, the paint surface spreads by itself and no brush marks remain.
  • Self Priming - No primer is needed.
  • Because of the Self Sealing feature, the painted surface no longer needs protection as the surface becomes durable and beautiful as is.

From thought to action

I read on the side of the paint can that to achieve a durable finish, at least 2 coats are required and a 250ml can would cover about 4m2.

The bed was conveniently in parts, so it did not need to be disassembled.

I roughened the old paint surface of the bed with Mirka sanding pad and for the hardest spots, M3 sanding sponge.

The bed hardly had any dents, so a light roughening of the paint surface was enough.

I wiped off the sanding dust and let it dry a little before starting to paint.

For painting, I was prepared with an oval S-sized Frenchic brush and a roller.

In the end, no roller was needed because I got a good and even finish with the brush.

Two coats of paint were enough for the bed, but next time I would reserve a little more paint because porous wood can absorb more paint and you shouldn't skimp on paint if you want to achieve a durable paint surface.

Our daughter could hardly wait for the paint to dry, but a good drying time also affects the durability of the paint surface. After drying time, the bed was assembled and placed in the daughter's room in a prime spot.

Oh, the joyful squeals that the new bed caused. It was a rewarding moment!

Frenchic's website has great painting instructions and tips for painting. By following these instructions, you will achieve a good painting result.

Thanks to Frenchic for the collaboration, which made it possible to customize a beautiful bed for my daughter.

These paints are close to my heart and it has been nice to work with them.

So far I don't have a next project planned, but you never know if the next project suddenly pops up in front of me and my hands start itching to get to work.
