4 steps to renew kitchen cabinets

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, the place where we gather to work, study, eat and celebrate with family and friends.

It's no wonder that the kitchen is at the top of the list of renovation targets for most people - it's a space that everyone retreats to and it should be genuinely inviting and comfortable.

However, not everyone has the opportunity to do a complete kitchen renovation with new appliances, countertops and cabinets, so many choose to brighten up old surfaces with an easy-to-use, self-adhesive chalk paint for kitchen cabinets.

Why choose Frenchic paint for kitchen cabinets?

- Inexpensive and effective solution: High-quality Frenchic paint gives the cabinets a new look on a small budget.
- Wide range of colors: There are plenty of shades available, from classic neutrals to bold blues, yellows and plums.
- Simple to use: Frenchic paint is easy to use and suitable for both beginners and more experienced renovators.

If you're ready to get started, keep reading for clear step-by-step instructions on how to paint.

In addition, we go through which products you need, how to prepare the surfaces and the best methods to achieve the perfect end result.

Should the cabinets be replaced or painted?

Painting your cabinets is a faster, simpler, and more cost-effective option than replacing them, and the end result can be just as stunning. However, check the condition of the cabinets in advance, as some may be in too bad a condition to be saved by painting alone.

If the cabinets are structurally intact and functional, but worn:

- A new look with paint: Painting can be enough for a complete renovation.
- Renovation of handles: You can also refurbish existing handles without the need to drill new holes.

What is the best paint for cabinets?

Forget strong-smelling oil or latex paints that require painstaking priming. The best paint for kitchen cabinets is Frenchic paint.

- Low VOC emissions and little smell: Frenchic paint is water-based and glides wonderfully.
- No need for primer: Frenchic paint with primer saves time and effort.
- Color options: Boldly choose dark shades or keep things subdued with light neutrals.

Do the cabinets need to be primed before painting?

Not if you use a paint that contains a primer, such as Frenchic paints, which are great for kitchen cabinets. If you are painting new, bare wooden cabinets, you should seal the surface before painting and apply 2-3 layers of Finishing Coating. Read more about the properties of Frenchic paints.

Painting kitchen cabinets in four easy steps:

1. Cleaning
Kitchen cabinets collect dirt, so start with a thorough cleaning. Remove the doors and handles before painting, and clean the surfaces with Sugar Soap, an effective degreaser. After that, rinse with clean water and let it dry completely.

2. Light sanding
When the surfaces are clean and dry, sand them lightly, especially if they are smooth and shiny. This improves the adhesion of the paint. Then wipe off the dust with a damp cloth and let it dry.

3. Painting
After the preparation, it's time to paint the first layer. Use a high-quality brush and paint parallel to the grain of the wood. Remember to observe drying times between layers and take care not to apply a new layer too early. It takes about three weeks for the paint to completely harden, so the surfaces are resistant to bumps and stains. Paint only with well-mixed paint.

4. Finishing
If you wish, you can also restore the handles of the cabinets. Frenchic Frensheen powder and Finishing coating give the handles a durable and metallic look.
