What supplies do I need to paint furniture?

When the equipment is intact, clean and of high quality, it is a pleasure to work and things go smoothly. You should have several brushes, small and slightly larger. However, don't use those old and dirty garage and cabin brushes! We have listed the essential accessories for you here:

✔️ You need detergent, sponge, cloth and sandpaper for preparation.

✔️ You may also need a scraper or paint stripper, masking tape and filler, and something to spread it on.

✔️ For painting, you need high-quality brushes, small rollers, a paint tray and a jar for paint.

✔️ You will also need a protective cloth or paper, something to open the paint can with and something to mix the paint with.

Preparation supplies

📍 Detergent. An effective grease and dirt removing detergent.

📍 Sponge and cloth. For washing and drying.

📍 Medium or fine sandpaper - get a good quality and durable one - not disk use.

📍 A screwdriver to remove handles, doors and so on - you may need both cross and flat tip options.

📍 Pen or pencil for numbering drawers and doors - it's really worth numbering things, even if you think they're identical, because both drawers and doors fit best back to the place or opening they came from.

📍 A small box or box where you can keep screws, handles and the like together.

📍 Ketchup for cleaning dirty metal handles - yes, really! Cover the stained items with ketchup, leave for a few hours and then clean

📍 Finishing Coat for porous surfaces or to prevent penetration.

Possible extras

- Filler suitable for surface scratches, filler and spatula for applying it

- Paint scraper or paint removal blade

- Trimming tape - get a good quality tape and remove it before the paint dries. You can attach protective papers with low-quality tape.

Painting supplies

🔴 Protective fabric, an old sheet or some other kind of protection for the floor and the environment. As tempting as it is not to protect the environment, we recommend it!

🟠 Old and comfortable painting clothes - people who paint regularly have a lot of practical renovation clothes with paint stains!

🟡 Something to open a can of paint - the perfect accessory is a custom can opener. However, you can use other tools, but be careful not to damage yourself, the edge of the can and the lid.

🟢 Something you can mix the paint with - it needs to be long enough to reach the bottom of the can and wide enough to mix the paint thoroughly. Use a specially made paint mixing stick if you want to avoid ruining the only ruler in the house!

🟣 High-quality brushes - they make painting really easy. A few brushes of different sizes is a good idea, as explained in our instructions on the best brushes for painting furniture.

⚫️ Small rollers - some like sponge, some prefer fleece types. Either way, they're great for larger surfaces - and quick to paint the first coat.

🟤 Small paint tray - for use with rollers or instead of a paint tray (see below).

🔴 Paint container - something rather low, but rigid, like a plastic food takeaway container or an old freezer box (with a lid is good!). It is good to dose the paint from the paint can into another container and use it instead of painting directly from the paint can.

This is due to the following reasons:

  • Debris in the brush or roller can end up in the paint can

  • Debris can fall into an open paint can, for example when painting outdoors

  • It eliminates the temptation to wipe excess paint from the brush onto the edge of the can, which can dry out and make it difficult to seal the paint can tightly

  • When you close the can while painting, it reduces drying and evaporation of the paint in the paint can.
