Painting a radiator: how to refresh an old radiator
Painting a radiator is an affordable way to update your home without replacing it. Old radiators with yellowed white paint can be painted to match the walls or made a colorful feature of your interior.
Frenchic water-based paints are suitable for refreshing previously painted and powder-coated radiators when the surface is in good condition and has been carefully prepared.
Can you paint a radiator with regular furniture paint?
Not all furniture paints are suitable for radiators. The paint must withstand the radiator’s normal operating temperature and temperature fluctuations.
You can use suitable Frenchic paints to refresh water-heated radiators in your home. Always check that your chosen paint is suitable for the intended use and can withstand the heat before painting.
How do you paint a radiator?
A successful radiator paint job starts with careful preparation.
- Turn off the heating and let the radiator cool. The surface to be painted should be cool.
- Clean the radiator thoroughly. Remove dust, grease and dirt. Let the surface dry.
- Check the old paintwork. Remove any peeling paint and rust. If needed, sand glossy surfaces to improve adhesion.
- Protect the surrounding area. Cover the floor and wall around the radiator. Also protect the valves and any other parts that should not be painted.
- Apply thin coats. Use a quality brush or small paint roller and follow the drying times specified for the product.
- Let the paint dry and cure. Only turn the heating back on in accordance with the paint’s instructions.
What color should you paint a radiator?
Your radiator doesn’t have to stand out from the wall. Painting it the same color as the wall creates a calm, cohesive look in the room.
For a more individual look, try deep green, dark blue or a soft, muted shade. Dark radiators can also look stunning against a light wall.
Frequently asked questions about painting radiators
Can you paint an old radiator?
Yes. Many previously painted and powder-coated radiators can be refreshed with a new coat of paint, as long as the surface is in good condition and the paint is suitable for the radiator's operating temperature.
Should you sand a radiator before painting it?
Glossy or very smooth paint finishes should generally be lightly scuffed. Peeling paint and rust must be removed before applying a new coat. A new coat won't cover up old paint runs, so sand them down if you want an even finish.
Can you paint a radiator the same color as the wall?
Yes! You can choose the same shade for your radiator as for your walls, as long as you use paint suitable for radiators. This lets the radiator blend beautifully into your room's decor.
Can you paint an electric radiator?
Painting an electric radiator is not recommended without the device manufacturer's explicit approval. Painting may affect the device's safety and heat output.
Can you paint a rusty radiator?
Surface rust should be removed, and the metal surface treated with a suitable rust-inhibiting primer if necessary.
Give your radiator a fresh look and complete your home's color scheme! Frenchic's versatile range of shades offers options for both subtle and striking results.
