WHAT WEATHER AND CONDITIONS ARE SUITABLE FOR PAINTING?

When should you paint outdoors?

Spring brings color and the urge to get out and work in the garden. Perhaps you're also thinking about spring and summer garden parties?

But when is the weather right for outdoor painting, and what conditions ensure a beautiful, long-lasting finish? Here's a clear guide that takes you through the secrets of spring painting weather, step by step.

Al Fresco is a paint range suitable for outdoor furniture, which you can use to paint wooden or metal furniture in your garden, on the patio and on balconies.

Why is the weather crucial for outdoor painting?

Painting outdoors isn't just about wielding a brush. The weather directly affects how the paint adheres, dries and cures. Weather that's too cold, too damp or too warm can result in a porous surface, uneven drying or even paint that cracks easily.

The best temperature in spring for successful painting

In spring, it's best to wait for steady temperatures without sudden cold nights.

Recommendations for outdoor painting:

  • +10°C – +25°C is generally a good temperature range for painting. If it's too cold, drying slows down; if it's too hot, the paint surface dries too quickly.

  • The overnight temperature should stay at at least +10°C so the paint can cure overnight without moisture damage.

Tip: In spring, morning and evening temperatures can fluctuate a lot. Check the forecast for the next 48 hours too, not just the day you plan to paint.

What weather is ideal for outdoor painting?

  1. The best spring painting weather is like light silk:
    Not too much moisture
    No excessively hot sun
A light breeze keeps dust away

Perfect weather:
✔️ Dry air and a light breeze
✔️ Overcast but dry day
✔️ No rain or dew
✔️ Relative humidity below 80%
✔️ Steady surface temperature without extremes

Avoid painting immediately after rain, as moisture slows drying and weakens the paint's adhesion.

Spring schedule and when to pick up the paint can

In Finland, spring is a great time to paint outdoors if the weather is favorable.
Best time:
May–June, when temperatures are generally steady throughout the day and the risk of night frosts is over.

In April, days can be warm, but nights may still be too cold. In spring, it’s best to paint when:

  • temperatures remain stable from morning to evening
  • the forecast promises at least 48 hours of dry weather
  • humidity is moderate

5 mistakes that ruin a painting project and how to avoid them

  1. Painting in weather that is too cold
-> +10°C is often the lowest safe temperature for painting outdoors.

  2. Direct sunlight and heat
-> excessive heat causes the paint surface to dry too much and crack. Brush marks dry visibly in excessive heat. In hot weather, paint can even dry on the brush, so wait for the heat to subside.

  3. Humidity and rain
-> exterior painting should be done in dry weather or protected from rain. In excessive humidity, paint may not dry at all.

  4. Storing paint in the wrong conditions
-> paint stored in the cold will not adhere optimally. Do not use paint that has frozen and thawed.

  5. Not checking the full weather forecast
-> also monitor nighttime temperatures, especially if you leave painted furniture outside overnight.

Spring exterior painting checklist, print and use:

🔲 The weather forecast has been checked for the next 48 hours
🔲 Temperature above +10°C on both days
🔲 Moderate surface temperature, no daytime heat
🔲 Humidity below 80%
🔲 Paint, brushes and supplies are at the right temperature
🔲 The surface is dry and clean before painting

Summary: how to paint properly in spring

Spring painting weather is no accident. When you take temperature, humidity, sunshine and nighttime conditions into account, your painting project goes smoothly and you get a durable result. The right weather conditions ensure a beautiful, durable and even finish.

Exterior painting in autumn: what should you consider before winter?

Spring is the starting point, but autumn is the last maintenance stop before winter frosts. If timed right, painting in autumn can protect surfaces all winter, but work done at the wrong time may remain half-dry and be exposed to moisture. Late-autumn hot days are humid, and dew is already collecting on outdoor furniture at night, so avoid painting in the afternoon to give the paint film time to dry before evening.

When can you still paint in autumn?

In autumn, the most important things are stable temperatures and humidity.

✔ Daytime temperature at least +10°C
✔ Nighttime temperature must not drop below +5°C
✔ No overnight frost expected in the next 48 hours
✔ Relative humidity below 80%
✔ No excessive overnight humidity

In autumn, the sun no longer dries surfaces as effectively as it does in summer. This means drying times are longer. It's better to paint in the morning than in the evening, so the surface has time to dry before the damp night.

The 4 most important autumn maintenance tasks for exterior surfaces

  1. Check the painted surface before winter
Look for peeling, cracks, and worn areas. Even a small touch-up can prevent moisture from getting into the structure during winter.

  2. Wash away dirt and algae
Autumn dampness encourages algae growth. A clean surface will overwinter better.

  3. Touch up worn areas
For example, doors, railings, and outdoor furniture are subject to the most wear.

  4. Protect painted furniture
Move all your painted furniture into winter storage.

Storing paint over winter: how to extend its usable life

Water-based paint does not tolerate freezing or extreme temperature fluctuations. Frozen paint loses its structure and will not return to normal, even after it thaws.

The right storage temperature

✔ +5°C – +20°C
✔ Dry place
✔ No freezing temperatures
✔ No direct sunlight

A storage room, garage, or cold cottage storage area may not be enough if the temperature drops below freezing. The best place is indoors, such as a utility room or a heated storage area.

How to store an opened paint can properly

  • Wipe the rim of the can clean before closing it (foil is a good way to protect the rim while painting)
  • Close the lid tightly
  • Turn the can upside down briefly to make the lid airtight
  • Write the date and intended use on the can
  • When you open the can with a paint can opener, the lid stays straight and seals tightly again.

Tip: If the can is not full, you can place plastic wrap under the lid to reduce the amount of air reaching the paint. Small amounts of paint are best transferred to a smaller container.

Can you still use old paint?

A paint can that has been sitting on the shelf for a long time needs thorough stirring.

Before painting season begins, check:

✔ Has the paint remained consistent?
✔ Does it smell normal?
✔ Does the texture become smooth when stirred?
✔ No lumps or separated water after stirring?

Always stir thoroughly from the bottom before use. Paint that has frozen or been exposed to frost cannot return to its original condition.

Spring and autumn together – the best painting strategy for the year

Bigger projects get started in spring.
In autumn, maintain and touch up paint and ensure both paint and painted furniture are protected for winter.

By considering the temperature, humidity, paint, and proper winter storage for painted furniture, you can get a finish that lasts year after year.
