An imperfect home, colors, and memories

An imperfect home, colors, memories, and wall art

The most beautiful home isn’t flawless, but uniquely yours. A little ding, a piece of furniture you painted yourself, and creative wall art tell your story more than a perfect catalog interior.

Here at Frenchic, we predict that so-called Instagram homes will start to become more authentic, with more everyday life appearing in photos: “imperfection” will become more popular and interesting content than staged spaces arranged for photoshoots.

A perfect home is often a little boring

Many people remember the “fancy sofa” from childhood, the one you weren’t allowed to put your feet up on, let alone jump on.

Or what if that white rug or white sofa keeps a family with children from enjoying life, and if everything is too polished and arranged, the space can become somewhere you don’t feel comfortable relaxing in.

Peace and tranquility don’t come from white walls, but from a home that feels alive and personal. Colors, memories, and little imperfections make a home a place where you can truly feel good and unwind.

Imagine a world without color. A pretty bleak thought.

That’s why it’s good to remember that a calm, balanced home doesn’t mean an all-white interior or Swiss-style neutrality.

Peace is often found in shades that feel gentle and true to you.

So forget the pursuit of perfect social media aesthetics

Honestly, we all have something at home that’s a little crooked, glued together, or slightly battered. Even a designer’s home has wobbly tables and “things” rescued with glue & tape.

It’s these little memories and imperfections that make a house a home.

A little imperfection gives a home character and makes it feel welcoming and trustworthy

We all have something that’s seen a bit of life and isn’t perfect, like

  • That slightly wobbly table you’ve been meaning to fix for years

  • A chair found at a flea market that has been given a new lease on life with paint

  • A craft made for you by someone dear to you, a child, or a grandparent

Color ties stories together

When you let colour bring these "imperfect" treasures together, your home looks considered and authentic, not like a storage room. If the same shade appears on a shelf, a chair and a picture frame, the items are as if they're part of the same group chat.

Frenchic paints are perfect for just this:

  • You can save an old table with a single shade. You could paint just the table frame and legs, for example, and leave the worn tabletop to tell its story.

  • You can bring mismatched dining chairs together by painting them in the same palette or complementary shades.

  • Frames, baskets and storage furniture can be brought together with a small painting project in the children's room, hallway and porch.

Wall art: group almost anything together and it will look great!

Don't scatter objects around the home; group them together. A picture doesn't have to be just one framed print in the middle of the wall, either.

You could try grouping these on a wall or in a stairwell, for example:

  • Woven baskets in different sizes and shapes

  • Plates as artwork; try to find ones in a similar colour palette

  • Different mirrors on the wall, grouped together in assorted shapes and beautiful frames

  • With a small tin of paint in a shade darker than the wall, you can paint a graphic shape on it: a circle or rectangle, with a picture or plant in front.

With a small tin of Frenchic paint, you can also create your own "background shade" on the wall, making it easy to create an ever-changing display or place a large picture on the floor, leaning against the wall.

What if you painted a large semicircle in the shimmering gold shade Kings Gold on the bedroom wall, behind the bed?

Colours make memories

Colours evoke memories. Certain shades can remind you of trips, a garden, your childhood home or an important time in your life.

What colour in your home always makes you feel something when you walk into the room?

You can make use of this:

Colour isn't just something you see; it's something you experience.

Every room, with its colours and memories, can remind you of something important, bring out a side of you, or transport you to a time or place.

  • Paint a table or chair that brings back holiday memories in a shade that reminds you of the trip.

  • The vibrant, bright blue Kiss Me Sloely might bring back memories of trips to Greece. You can also use the shade on your garden furniture and create your own little Greek corner in your yard or on your balcony.

  • Terracotta, pink, yellow, and bright blue will transport you back to India’s spicy atmosphere and bold color palette

  • Which shade reminds you of a special place: Lapland, the seaside, a summer cottage...

  • Fresh flowers in a vase against a green wall are a reminder of summer, even when it’s gray outside

  • A particular shade can take your mind to distant lands, even if the journey takes place only in your imagination

When you understand the light and atmosphere in your space, it’s easier to find the right combination of shades, and the result looks just as you hoped.

That’s the power of color. It’s not just decoration, but emotion, identity, and memories.

Color is emotion. And if you’re staring at white walls but secretly dreaming of something completely different, I know exactly where you should start.

Start with these, gently but decisively:

• Understand how the room really works and how natural light moves through the space
• Decide what kind of atmosphere you want to feel, not just see
• Learn how colors behave and why some shades fall flat in certain light, in your own home, where you’re making changes
• Choose a palette you genuinely love and can repeat across different surfaces.
• Decide where to add color so it looks thoughtful rather than random. Also choose that bold, colorful treat you’ve always dreamed of but haven’t dared to use yet!

If you feel stuck, this is the list to start with.
And that’s exactly why a wall color doesn’t always look the same in your home as it does on a friend’s or neighbor’s wall.

Your home is a story, not a catalog. And paint is one of the easiest ways to bring that story to life.
