Decoupage tips.

What is the decoupage technique?

Decoupage means attaching paper patterns to a painted or treated surface so that the result looks like part of the surface. The technique is based on layering, blending, and finishing, not just gluing on an image.

That's exactly why chalk paints and decoupage work so well together. Layered painting, waxes, and different finishing products give the surface depth and character that's difficult to achieve with traditional furniture paint.

A brief history of the decoupage technique

Découpage comes from the French word découpeur, which means cutting. However, the technique's roots go much further back than France.

  • In China, as early as the 13th century, paper cutouts were used to decorate boxes, lanterns, and windows
  • In the 17th century, Venice in Italy brought the technique into the spotlight and popularized it in Europe
  • In Europe, decoupage evolved into a refined form of decorative art
  • Today, decoupage is a blend of tradition and modern DIY home decor.

What kinds of decoupage sheets are used?

Art sheets designed for the decoupage technique are:

  • thin yet durable
  • easy to blend into the surface
  • large in size, typically around 43 x 58 cm

They are particularly suitable for:

  • for dressers and cabinets
  • for doors and drawer units
  • for mixed media art projects
  • for recycled décor

Smaller sheet sets are also available for practice and small projects.

Decoupage step by step – easy instructions

1. Prepare the surface carefully

A clean, dust-free surface is the key to success. Wash the surface and let it dry.

2. Choose the base color carefully

  • Full-coverage sheet: a light base color highlights the design and reproduces the sheet’s colors accurately
  • Partial coverage: choose a color that matches the sheet’s background
  • For example: if the sheet has white or light-colored areas, their color will change when you apply the sheet to a red or black base, for instance. A white base keeps the sheet’s colors close to their original appearance.

3. Smooth the surface

Paint the surface until smooth, sand lightly, and remove the dust.

4. Place the decoupage sheet and gently smooth it onto the surface

  • Apply a thin coat of finishing medium and place the sheet on the damp surface.
  • Best way to smooth: Carefully smooth using a plastic bag or cling film.
  • Avoid sharp smoothing tools to prevent tearing.
  • A soft-bristled brush is also good for smoothing the sheet with a light touch.

5. Use only the top, patterned layer

  • If the decoupage sheet has multiple layers, use only the top, patterned paper layer.
  • Frenchic decoupage sheets are single-layer, so there are no layers to worry about.
  • If using wallpaper, for example, soak it first so the layers are easier to separate.

6. Tear rather than cut

  • Wet the brush and trace along the edge of the design.
  • Tear gently to create a natural-looking edge.
  • Tear the edges of the sheet too if you use the whole sheet
  • The original sharp edges, cut with scissors or a knife, are difficult to blend in.

7. Let dry and finish

Let dry, (sand lightly) and add a new coat of finishing medium. Repeat 1–2 times if needed.

Tips for an especially beautiful result

  1. It’s best not to choose a light sheet for a dark base
  2. A white base brings out the colors best
  3. You can extend the edges of the image with paint
  4. Multiple shades, waxes, and crackle mediums add depth

Create a crackle effect with crackle medium: dark base color, crackle medium, light top color.

Decoupage on a small and large scale

Decoupage is suitable for:

  • for small decorative objects
  • for large furniture and art furniture
  • for paintings and frames
  • for recycled décor

A picture made on an old frame is an easy way to try the technique.

Supplies for a decoupage project

  1. A decoupage sheet or a combination of several
  2. Brushes, various sizes
  3. Hair dryer: speeds up drying between coats and gets the job done faster
  4. Plastic bag or cling film: the best way to smooth the sheet and achieve a wrinkle-free finish, if desired
  5. Sanding tools: you can blend sanded edges; cut ones
  6. Cleaner: always work on a clean surface for a durable result
  7. Finishing product: Matte or glossy and splash-resistant when you choose Frenchic Finishing Coat
  8. Waxes, gold paints, and crackle medium: patina, effects, and depth
  9. White primer: essential at least where the sheet will go, even if your furniture is light-colored.

Why try the decoupage technique?

The decoupage technique lets you create completely unique surfaces. It combines painting, visual art, and furniture renovation in a way that suits both beginners and experienced crafters.

Once you have mastered the preparation and finishing, the result will look hand-painted and stand the test of time.

Add a special detail and experiment boldly with effects

  • Try Easy Crackle to create a crackled surface. First paint with a dark shade, add Easy Crackle, then finish with light-colored paint and add the sheet - the result is a stunning aged surface.
  • Placing and attaching the sheet to the dresser: Position the sheet like wallpaper and cut it open along the drawer seams only once it is dry. Remove the handles before attaching it.
  • Paint and finish with brown wax if you want a patinated surface
  • White wax creates a beautiful veil on the surface and evens out the tones
  • Add metallic shades
  • Add more shades and blend the edges. You can continue the image with paint.
