Saltwash® - frequently asked questions and answers

• What is SALTWASH®?

Saltwash® is a powder to be added to primer that creates a unique worn finish on any surface. Saltwash® was invented to mimic the authentic weathered paint that Saltwash® owners had seen on the porches and furniture of seaside cottages when they grew up on the coast. Their task was to create a product that can reproduce the layered, weathered look created by the sun and salt air, but which is also quick and easy to use.

• WHAT MAKES SALTWASH® A SUPERIOR TEXTURED PASTA POWDER?

• WHAT KIND OF SURFACES CAN SALTWASH® BE USED ON?

Saltwash® adheres to any surface regardless of wood, laminate, glass, fabric, plastic and many other surfaces, and it does not require any kind of preparation.

• WHAT CAN I COVER WITH SALWASH?
  

You can make art on board bases and create wonderful textured surfaces on canvas. You can make antique-looking pots, frames and furniture - even entire walls or paneling.

• CAN SALTWASH® BE MIXED WITH ANY PAINT?

Yes. Saltwash® can be mixed with any type of paint, such as latex, oil, acrylic, interior, exterior, chalk, milk, mineral or various clay paints.

• HOW MUCH SALWASH® SHOULD BE MIXED WITH SPECIALTY PAINTS SUCH AS CHALK OR MILK PAINTS?

When you use special paint, such as chalk or milk paint or Frenchic paints, you do not need to mix as much Saltwash® with them as with latex paints, for example.

• WHAT IS THE DRYING TIME?

Saltwash® contains real, authentic sea salt, which speeds up the drying process. Indoors, the drying time is about 1.5-2 hours per 1m2 area. Outside in sunny/dry conditions, the drying time is about 20-30 minutes per 1m2 area. Note: If Saltwash® has been applied very thickly to an area, the drying time may be longer in that area.

• DOES THE SALTWASH®-USED PIECE STILL NEED TO BE SEALED OR APPLIED WITH A PROTECTIVE LAYER OR A LAYER OF WAX?

Saltwash® is only a base layer. If the topcoat you are using requires the use of a sealer or wax layer, you must use one. What the surface layer of the paint requires also determines whether you need a sealing or protective wax layer.

• HOW MANY SQUARE METERS DOES ONE LARGE 1.2kg JAR OF SALTWASH® COVER? HOW MUCH DOES THE SMALL 238G CAN COVER?

1200g large can = 6-7m2 and 238g small can = 1.5-2m2, depending on the application method.

• HOW LONG DOES SALTWASH® KEEP MIXED WITH PAINT?

Saltwash® paint mixture can be stored in a properly sealed container for a maximum of 2 weeks. If your mixture has become too thick and dry, just add more paint to the mixture and mix it to your desired consistency.

• SHOULD A TOP PAINT BE APPLIED OVER THE SALTWASH® LAYER?

Yes, to achieve the desired Saltwash® look, you need to apply clean paint as a top coat and then sand to reveal the layers of Saltwash® primer.

• WHAT DIFFERENTS SALTWASH® FROM TYPICAL CHALK PAINT OR OTHER SPECIAL PAINTS?

Saltwash® is used as a base coat to create a texture paste or paste and authentic weathered appearance and can be added to specialty paints such as the Frenchic range of paints.

• WHAT MAKES SALTWASH® DIFFERENT THAN JUST PAINT?

Thanks to the chemical composition of Saltwash®, the Saltwash® layer dries evenly from bottom to top and from top to bottom. This alone is different from other typical paints that only dry from the top down, causing it to run and flatten and lose the layered look you want.

• WHAT IS SALTWASH® MADE OF?

Saltwash® is a patent pending product. Its chemical composition contains an active ingredient that, when added to paint and applied to any surface, starts to dry immediately and gives the desired layered, aged look. Saltwash does not contain VOC compounds and is a lead-free product.

• WHAT MAKES SALTWASH® SO DIFFERENT THAN OTHER TEXTURE PRODUCTS?

Saltwash® is a patent pending product and is the first and only product on the market to ever exhibit the patinated, sun-kissed finish and layering that Saltwash® provides. Although companies may try to copy the product, we are confident that there is only one way to Saltwash®!
